After the Movies...

Last Friday, I saw the Hunger Games!  I thought the movie was interesting, even though I didn't read the book.  My friend says I HAVE to read the books.  I was having a good time at the movies.  I saw a couple of my friends.  I was there with my mom and my brother, who is almost 18.  I went out to go to my mom's car and one kid was like, "Hello!".  Then, another kid, who was wearing a hat, said, "Hi"...and I turned back...but then he was laughing at me.  He said "hi" to be mean.  It was in a mean way.  I told him it wasn't funny, but I didn't know what else to say to him.  I knew he was being mean and it hurt my feelings.  I mean, just because I have autism doesn't mean they have the right to make fun of me.  I didn't know what to say to him to stick up for myself.  It is really hard to know what to do...I know you're supposed to be polite to people.  And, sometimes, if people are really mean, other people do irrational things like committing suicide.  You never know what is going to happen next, so I didn't know what to say to the mean kid.

Luckily, my mom stood up for me.  She yelled at the kid and told him not to make fun of me.  My mom was extremely disappointed.  She was furious at the kids.  If there is one thing I would like people to know about dealing with autism it's that we understand EVERYTHING...every time you make fun of us, we know.  We might not be able to come up with a quick comeback, but we hurt just the same.  I'm glad my mom was there to stick up for me.  Adolescents with autism are extremely nice and extremely kind.  We want to make friends with people...but it's so hard when people make fun of you for no reason.  I didn't even know that kid who was laughing at me.  It's so unfair...being a teenager is hard enough without total strangers picking on you.  If I could talk to him right now, I would tell him to NEVER do that again, to anyone.

My brother didn't do anything; he just watched my mom.  They discussed about the situation on and on and on.  He was supposed to stick up for me, because we're brother and sister.  But, my brother didn't understand that because he wasn't even paying attention to the situation.  My brother says that things like this happen.  He was bullied in middle school...and that makes me feel worse!  People actually stay home from school to avoid being bullied...but that's no way to live your life.  I just have to learn to stick up for myself.  It was a hard lesson to learn about.  I'm still upset about it, but by blogging and telling the world what happened, maybe more people will learn not to make fun of people who are different.
